However rap is my main focus because music=life. Some notable songs of this era/ beginning of rap are planet rock which is timeless amongst many. Some notable artists who still live on today are the likes of KRS-ONE as stated above and the beastie boys. Slick Rick has had some collaborations over the years but none as good as his timeless piece called “Children’s Story”. So as far as a time line goes it all began with DJ Kool Herc in the early 70’s with his jams. Soon following emcees took the stage at these jams . which eventually led to the beginning of hip hop music. Hip Hop had no identity as “gangster rap” until the early 90’s when the west coast got involved with groups like N.W.A who basically didn’t have any regard for anything or anyone which gave them the perception as public enemies(no pun intended). Which led them to become pawns for media bashing as far as “Is this what your kids are listening to” statements. Some other early 90’s groups like A tribe called Quest and De la Soul were around to bring hip hop jazz and funk together with their funky beats and lyrical substance.
Another group brought about controversy , that group being public enemy, for their constant battles with society with songs entitled “fuck the police”, “911 is a joke” and the classic “fight the power” which was the song of choice for the movie “do the right thing” directed by non other than Spike Lee. Skip over a few years and the greatest fueled argument of all time Tupac or Biggie. Both however passed away as we know but their legacy lives on. Who do you think is better? Feel free to comment below , my apologies but im going with BIG poppa on this one J . During the same era it’s the who? It’s the WU’……Wu-tang clan that is, also arguably one of the best hip hop groups of all time, some would also argue bone thugs. But Wu-tang forever. Their raw style of hip hop is exactly what they’re known for, and where are they from? staten island one of our prestigious 5 boroughs. In the late 90s we got a taste of a kid named jay-z who was under Biggie, and didn’t get his time to shine up until 96 with his album Unreasonable doubt. A classic in my eyes with one of the best songs on the album featuring non other than big himself “brooklyns finest”. We’ve had many artist have their time to shine jay-z, BIG,BIG PUN, Fat Joe, Ludacris, Big-L, Nas Busta Rhymes, Consequence, Kanye West , Slick Rick, kid cudi, the list goes on. So feel free to comment with some more history basically anything you want to share. Until next time.
“I bomb atomically, Socrates philosophies, and hypothesis cant define how I be droppin’ these mockeries, lyrically perform arm robbery, flee with the lottery possibly they spotted me”- Wu Tang.

I noticed you just spoke about hip hop up until the 90's and didnt speak about the year 2000 and beyond. Yes you did mention Kid Cudi and Kanye West who both happen to be great rappers but really didnt get into the past decade. Is it because you and I share the same belief that hip hop lately has taken a turn for the worse. With rappers such as Soulja boy and Gucci mang who are not really doing anything to improve hip hop and just following everything people see wrong with hip hop. That you also believe as Nas said "Hip Hop died". Back in the times of KRS-ONE people were actually saying something and the rappers that are saying something today and are worth listening to dont make it on to the radio as much, rappers such as the roots, mos def, immortal techinque, and lupe fiasco. You are more likely to hear Drake and Gucci mang five times on the radio before anyone of the previous artist i mentioned make it one thats even if they do get played.
"so if your message ain't shit, fuck the records you sold/cuz if you go platinum, it's got nothing to do with luck/it just means that a million people are stupid as fuck"-Immortal Technique, Industrial Revolution
Well i spoke about the history of hip hop and its background. its just to give the readers a little bit of how it all came to be. but i agree, all the new artists that are coming out with mediocre material are first to go on the radio rather than people of substance like lupe and mosdef. our generation of music is caught up more on something catchy rather than something that means something, and ofcouse something thats vulgar because it's "cool" to say things like that.
Do you think Disco/Classical has contributed to modern hip/hop and rap?
rap contains a lot of different things, for example in a lot of kanye songs, he uses samples from older songs and incorporates them with his more modern beats. so ofcourse classical music has affected rap. if you watched step up, you can dance ballet and put a little hip hop in there, the same can be said for music because anything is possible.
i'm looking forward to read more :) especially for me i'll know what good songs are out there :) (i don't listen to much american music) soo it will be good to keep up with what's new and out there :)
"However rap is my main focus because music=life",I think rap is the genre with the most lyrics on the rapper's personal life experiences. Although, it's sometimes hard to understand the lyrics for me.
I agree, with rap comes metaphors most of which i cannot make out myself which makes it so cool. If you think about it, it takes a lot of skill to be able to put together something poetic&real and mesh it into a beat as well as keep it a certain topic. some rappers like nas and lupe fiasco tell stories through their music and they way they do it is amazing, a 4 minute story thats filled with metaphors. i wish i had that kinda skill.
